We teamed up with with AJ Architecture on this renovation to overhaul this 1960’s family home. The footprint of the existing ground floor was increased and a second storey added to create a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom architecturally designed home, with inviting, double-height entry and stairwell, open plan interior living spaces that flow to the outdoor living areas.
Mixed use of materials were used for the exterior cladding. Traditional bevel-back weatherboards to match in with the existing dwelling, while the use of a vertical profiled metal cladding for clean lines and a modern aesthetic.

renovation
After completing stage one of this project - two first floor bathroom, we had the challenging task of renovating the ground floor. A 1970s architecturally designed home still in its original style, we concurrently re landscaped the rear yard around an existing pool and completing renovated the ground floor. Structural steel beams were carefully installed to create an open concept kitchen, living and dining while preserving the newly appointed first floor above.
All existing exterior windows and doors were upgraded to match all new double glazed Altherm aluminium joinery. This meant removal and reinstatement of existing cladding to allow retro fitting of new units.
An extra bedroom and ensuite were added to the ground floor footprint with its own access to a private courtyard.
In addition to the hard landscaping to the pool area a pumphouse/gym was constructed, flanked by off plank finish poured in-situ concrete retaining walls and timber stairs leading to the main house.

PONSONBY
FULL
RENOVATION
Starting with a clean slate, this town house was a full renovation. We designed, built and landscaped both the inside and outside of the property.
Working with a small section, we maximised the 90m2 section to create a sense of space and tranquility, offering calm amongst the chaos of Ponsonby.
Testimonial
“I approached Astute Build because I had heard of their reliability and attention to detail. After receiving a detailed, written quote for the job, Matt, Jess and their team started on time, dealt with unforeseen pitfalls and finished at the estimated time. Throughout the build I was kept informed of activity on site with regular progress reports and their reputation proved accurate. One thing that I particularly liked was being consulted and involved with decision making throughout the project. I was impressed with the quality of their workmanship, and I found that Matt and Jess made renovating - a relatively stressful experience for me, less stressful. I will use them in the future and I would recommend them to others who want their job well done.”

Front yard
Renovation
We were engaged by the client to reconfigure the front of the property. Due to a lack of off street parking and a lack of connection to the front door.
This Involved reinstating the front entrance leading to the existing veranda, excavate and support the house to create off street parking, construct timber and concrete entrance stairs with rough sawn off plank finish retaining walls. Colonial handrails and balustrades were installed in keeping with the style and period of the original villa.
Plantings and repurposed brick paths and were added to soften the landscape and provide a purposeful finish.

renovation
We were engaged by the client to facilitate the design and build of this project. Working in collaboration with Woodbox Architecture we came up with a design that met the clients brief.
The original Californian style bungalow was extended into the rear yard to create a spacious open plan living, dining and kitchen. The existing living room was converted into a master bedroom with ensuite and walk in wardrobe. An upstairs room was constructed within the roof space, complete with a new shed dormer, a spacious media room was formed.
Duel timber bi-folding doors lead onto the rear deck that wraps around to a covered veranda. A modern yet classic designed kitchen by Kate Crooks Design was incorporated into the space, along with new laundry and home office space.

Set on a quaint corner section in leafy Mt Albert, the architect has really hit the mark here. This project sought to add connection to the outside, the light and the pool. Whilst adding a new bedroom/study with ensuite and walk in robe, new kitchen, new main bathroom, laundry, extensive decking, fences and new car parking area.
No expense was spared to replicate all the original timber details and accents that give this home its charm. Recycled Kauri flooring was used to keep the extension connected to the original house.
A tricky time consuming project but with a very satisfying result that speaks for its self.

Major foundation works required us to bridge over a public sewer in order to extend the footprint of the existing early 2000’s low spec house. The floor plan was increased from a single level 3 bedroom, 187m2 home to a 2 storey modern 4 bedroom home with a self contained apartment.
Substantial structural work was carried out, new aluminium joinery installed and designed to allow light into the central area of the house. This was done through a combination of light wells high-level windows and rooflights.

addition
We worked in partnership with the client and designer to open up and connect the house with the surrounding landscape and environment.
The large living space incorporated a number of energy efficient features, including foundation and slab design, insulation, low-E double glazing to the exterior joinery, and passive heat transfer through a ventilation system from the new fireplace to the rest of the house.
The swimming pool was incorporated into the design scheme with wrap-around hardwood decks and frameless glass balustrading.
Testimonials
Jesse and Matt were engaged to carry out an addition on a house we recently purchased. They took on project managing the entire design scheme including a new swimming pool and large area of decking and planting. Their organisation of trades and high expectation of finishes delivered an exceptional product within budget and a timely manner.
